For the lover of pearls, the allure lies not just in their luminous glow but in their extraordinary scarcity. A pearl is a treasure so rare that only one in 10,000 wild molluscs might cradle it — a gem not forged in the earth's fiery depths, but layered within the soft body of a living creature.

Ask even a devoted lover of pearls how a pearl is actually made, and most cannot say. Many assume no one really knows — that a pearl is simply a gift, or a work of God. For centuries that was the honest position, and it produced some of the loveliest writing in any language.

It is no longer the position. What follows is the answer: how myth gave way to observation, and what the mollusc is really doing when it makes a pearl.

1. The Rare Gift of Nature: Why Pearls Are Precious

Every other gemstone is dug out of rock. A pearl grows inside a living mollusc — oysters in the sea, mussels and clams in rivers and lakes.

3. From Mystery to Mastery: The Science of Pearls

As curiosity replaced myth, naturalists set out to decode the pearl's creation. The journey spanned centuries.

  • 1554 Rondelet proposed that pearls were diseased concretions within molluscs — a decisive shift from divine explanation to biological one.
  • c. 1600 Anselmus de Boot suggested that pearls and shells are made of the same material.
  • 18th century René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur confirmed that pearls are made of nacre, the same substance that lines the shell.
  • 1761 Carl Linnaeus succeeded in artificially inducing pearl formation in freshwater mussels — foreshadowing cultured pearls by more than a century.

Today the process is well understood.

Pearl Formation: What Actually Happens

The mollusc is not making a jewel. It is sealing off something it cannot get rid of — the way a body walls off a splinter it cannot push out, or a tree slowly grows over a nail driven into its trunk. The pearl is the wrapping, not the intention.

  1. An irritant enters the mollusc. In a natural pearl this may be a tiny parasite, organic material, or another foreign particle that becomes lodged in the soft tissue purely by accident. Being a foreign body, it irritates the mollusc.
  2. The defence system sets in. A pearl sac forms around the irritant, and cells in this sac begin secreting nacre — the same material that lines the inner surface of the shell. Nacre is made primarily of microscopic crystals of calcium carbonate, usually aragonite, together with an organic protein-rich matrix called conchiolin.
  3. The pearl is built layer by layer. Extremely thin plates of aragonite are laid down within this organic matrix. The proteins act rather like a natural cement, binding and organising the mineral crystals. More mineral is deposited, then more organic material, and the process repeats.
  4. Thousands of microscopic layers accumulate. Over several years the repeated deposition builds the pearl outward, layer upon layer, with the original irritant left at its centre. These nacre layers are also what produce the lustre: light interacts with and reflects through them, creating the soft glow and depth we associate with a fine pearl.

Why this matters for what you buy

The lustre of a pearl comes from light entering these layers and reflecting back from several depths at once. That is why a real pearl glows from within while an imitation shines only on its surface — and why nacre thickness, not size, is what makes a pearl beautiful and durable.

The Final Proof: Pearls Made to Order

If the making of a pearl were genuinely beyond understanding, it could not be repeated on demand. But it can be, and it is.

Since Mikimoto's work in the 1890s, the whole sequence has been started deliberately. A trained technician opens the mollusc, inserts a nucleus and a small piece of mantle tissue from a donor, and returns it to the water. The mollusc, sensing the intrusion exactly as it would sense a parasite, forms its pearl sac and begins to secrete. Years later the pearl is harvested. This happens thousands of times a day, on a schedule, with predictable results.

That is what finally settles the question. A process that can be started at will, timed, repeated and farmed is not a mystery. It is a mechanism — and effectively every pearl sold today began this way.

The global pearl jewellery market is worth well over twenty billion dollars and continues to grow, which is a plain measure of how durable the appeal has proved.
