Thirty-three large round pearls, graduated by nothing at all — every one the same size, the same colour, the same light.
Most freshwater strands sit between seven and nine millimetres. These are thirteen to fourteen — nearly double the volume of a standard pearl, and rare enough in round freshwater that a matched set of thirty-three takes real sorting.
Matching is the whole craft here. Every pearl has to agree with its neighbours on size, shape, colour and lustre, or the strand reads as a collection rather than as one piece. That is what the grade is measuring.

Are these real pearls?
Yes. They are genuine natural freshwater pearls, not shell-based or manufactured beads. Each strand ships with its gemmological certification card recording the identification, the grade and the measurements of the strand you receive.
What does AAA grade actually mean?
AAA is the top of the commercial grading scale used for freshwater pearls. It is a trade scale rather than a legal standard, and it measures four things together: how sharply the surface returns light, how clean that surface is, how close to truly round each pearl is, and how well the pearls match one another.
On a strand of thirty-three, the fourth of those is the hardest. One pearl slightly off in colour or size is visible immediately.
Will 17 inches suit me?
Seventeen inches sits just below the base of the throat on most necks, at the collarbone rather than on it. The 1.5-inch extender takes it to 18.5 inches, which drops it a little lower for a higher neckline or a fuller collar.
To check before ordering, run a tape measure around your neck where you want the pearls to fall, and add about half an inch for comfort.
How do I keep the pearls from dulling?
Pearl is nacre, which is porous — perfume, hairspray, sweat and cosmetics dull it over time, and chemical cleaners strip it permanently. Put the necklace on last, once everything else has dried, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth before it goes back in its bag.
Never use a jewellery dip, an ultrasonic cleaner or a polishing liquid on pearls. Worn and wiped regularly, a good strand keeps its lustre for decades.
