Intelligence and the Mind: From Perception to Non-Duality
Mind is not matter or energy. What appears in it is non-physical perception. Intelligence purifies perception—and clarity dissolves duality.
“Possessions may surround us, but they never enter the mind. Only understanding enters—and understanding belongs to intelligence.”

Part of an Ongoing Series
This article is part of a structured series on understanding the mind, intelligence, and the deeper question of identity. what is non-duality and what is enlightenment that we often speak of.
Each piece moves from observation towards clarity, helping translate these ideas into lived understanding.
At Totapari, jewellery is an extension of this clarity. It is not excess, but expression—simple, intentional, and aligned with the self.
When we turn our attention to the mind and dwell upon it, we have already moved beyond the body. This shift begins when we first understand the mind. The body belongs to the realm of matter and energy. The mind does not.
The mind is not a physical entity. It is neither matter nor energy. It is only associated with the body, not contained within it. In fact, the relationship is often misunderstood: the body does not command the mind; rather, the mind employs the body as its instrument. Another subtler presence in our body, the intelligence, guides the mind, as explained in What is Intelligence.
Every action is first registered in the mind. The body merely executes. This establishes a clear hierarchy: the mind is subtler and more powerful than the body.
The mind perceives objects and creates experience
Since the mind is not material, what it perceives cannot be material either. Objects of the world do not enter the mind.
What appears in the mind are perceived imprints—experiences, representations, appearances. These are not physical entities. They are non-material, experiential, and subtle. Understand this concept clearly that any interaction of the mind with the world outside is through senses and all these interactions remain in the mind as experiences.
In this sense, everything the mind perceives is spiritual and experiential in nature, not physical. The physical object remains outside. What exists for us is only the inner experience of it.
Happiness and sorrow belong only to the mind
No sensory organ creates happiness. No bodily process generates sorrow. Happiness and unhappiness are emotional evolutes of the mind alone.
A beggar can be happy. A wealthy person can also be happy. There is no difference between their happiness. The circumstances differ. The happiness does not.
When we are happy or unhappy, we must ask honestly: Is the body happy or unhappy, or is the mind happy or unhappy? The answer is self-evident. The body, being inert, cannot generate these emotions—only the mind can.
Why intelligence is indispensable
The mind perceives, reacts, desires, fears, and oscillates. But the mind cannot examine the quality of its own perception. Only intelligence (vivek) can do that, a faculty higher and superior to the mind.
This understanding that objects never enter the mind, and that happiness does not belong to possession, does not arise from the senses or in the body is of paramount importance. It arises only in the mind.
The mind must be guided by intelligence to correct its perception about happiness and unhappiness. Intelligence has the capacity refine and educate the mind to generate an equal perception in both situations of happiness and unhappiness. It is the pinnacle of spiritual sadhna.
Therefore, the task is not to change the world, but to purify perception in order to remain equipoised.
Spirituality as purity of perception
Spirituality is often misunderstood as belief, ritual, or withdrawal from life. In truth, spirituality begins when perception is recognised as non-physical and attention shifts inward.
Since perception itself is not material, it belongs to the spiritual domain. And since perception is shaped by interpretation, memory, and conditioning, it can be purified. This purification happens only through intelligence governing the mind, and begins practically through observation, as introduced in How to Start Meditation.
From duality to non-duality
As long as perception stands separate from the Perceiver, duality remains. Perceiver is the indwelling presence and perception is the experience of the mind.
- I am here,
- the world is there,
- I react to what I perceive.
When intelligence is applied again and again, perception slowly becomes clear. This clarity directly affects how we respond to the world, moving us away from reaction, as seen in Conquer the World Within.
As perception clears, something subtle changes.
The sense of “me here and the world there” begins to weaken.
When the mind is no longer projecting, clinging, or resisting, perception becomes transparent.
You are simply seeing, without adding anything.
In that clarity, the division between perceiver and the perceived and fades.
There is no effort to unite anything.
There is just no separation left.
This is non-duality—not as a concept or a special experience, but as the natural state that remains when division drops, when the mind stops seeing the world through its colours.
What enlightenment really means
Enlightenment is not the mind experiencing something extraordinary. The mind is incapable of grasping the Self.
Enlightenment occurs when:
- perception no longer stands apart from the Self,
- the mind no longer claims ownership,
- intelligence has fully done its work.
When perception and the perceiver (Self) are no longer felt as two, there is no one left to be enlightened. There is only clarity.
In closing
The body belongs to the realm of matter and energy. The mind belongs to the subtle, spiritual domain of experience. Intelligence, being subtler than the mind, should be employed to guide it toward correction and purification.
When intelligence purifies perception, the mind becomes transparent. When the mind becomes transparent, duality dissolves.
That dissolution is not escape from life. It is freedom within. That is the true role of intelligence.
