Tribal Teal
Necklace

One colour holds the whole necklace together. Six more interrupt it, and never in the same place twice.

The field is teal: a dozen and more strands of tiny round seed beads, all one colour, gathered close at the throat. Through them run flat, tube-cut stone beads in peach, jade green, grey-blue, brick red and cream — dropped in wherever they fall rather than spaced to a pattern.

Two contrasts are working at once. One colour against six, and one shape against another — small and round beside flat and square-cut. At the centre it all disappears into a cluster of hollow silver ghungroo, and from beneath that fall fine chains of pearl, stone and round turquoise.

The Field

Many strands of one teal, worn close so they stack. It is the ground everything else is read against.

The Scatter

Flat tube-cut stones in five or six colours, placed by eye. No interval repeats, so the eye keeps moving.

The Centre

A dense cluster of hollow silver bells, with fine chains of pearl, stone and turquoise falling from beneath it.

A single colour repeated is a rope. A single colour interrupted at irregular intervals is a necklace.

Care
  • Store in the airtight bag provided, and keep away from water and fragrance.
  • The bells are hollow. Water that gets inside one is very hard to get out and will dull the silver from within.
  • Never use a silver dip or an ultrasonic cleaner — a dip strips the oxidation and floods the bells, and an ultrasonic can loosen strung work.
  • Lay it flat to store, strands parallel. A many-stranded necklace twists around itself the moment it is bunched.
Note

All our jewellery is handcrafted, and hence some variations may occur, which only add to its beauty.

Questions

What are the coloured stones running through it?

Flat, tube-cut semi-precious stones in five or six colours — soft peach, jade green, grey-blue, brick red and cream. They are cut as short rectangles rather than rounded into beads, which is why they sit flat against the strands and catch light along an edge instead of a curve.

The teal itself is glass seed bead. Using glass for the field and stone for the incidents is the sensible way round: it keeps the necklace light enough to wear all evening.

Does it make a sound?

Yes, softly. The centre is a cluster of hollow ghungroo bells and they chime gently against one another as you move — not loudly, but enough to notice in a quiet room.

Most people find it the best thing about the piece. A few would rather their jewellery stayed silent, so it is worth knowing beforehand.

How does it sit?

Close and high. The strands gather at the base of the throat, the bell cluster sits in the hollow below it, and the chain fringe falls a few inches onto the chest. The length adjusts, but the design assumes the shorter setting.

It needs a bare or wide neckline. Against a high collar the bells and the fringe land on fabric and the centre of the piece disappears.

What should I wear it with?

Plain cotton, linen or khadi in a solid colour. Teal is a cool blue-green, so it lifts hardest against warm grounds — yellow, mustard, ochre, rust, cream — and sits quietly against white, indigo or black.

Avoid a printed or embroidered neckline. The necklace already carries six colours in a scatter; a pattern underneath turns both into noise.

Is it heavy?

Less than it looks. The strands are small glass seed beads, which are light, and the weight that is there sits in the bell cluster at the front and spreads across the whole width of the neck rather than pulling from one point.

It carries comfortably for an evening. It is a statement piece rather than a working-day one — for the presence and the sound as much as the weight.
