Questions
What does 6A grade actually mean?
6A sits at the top of the grading scale used for freshwater pearls. It is a trade scale rather than a legal standard, and it looks at four things together: how sharply the surface returns light, how clean that surface is, how close to truly round the pearl is, and how well the pearls match one another.
On a set like this the fourth point matters as much as the first. The pendant pearl and the two studs have to agree on colour and lustre, or the set reads as three separate pieces worn together.
What makes the lavender colour special?
Lavender is one of the least common body colours in freshwater pearl, and it is not a flat tint. It shifts with the light — cooler and greyer under daylight, warmer and pinker under lamplight — which is why a lavender pearl looks different across a day in a way a white one does not.
It is also easier to wear than white against Indian skin tones, since the cool undertone stops it from washing out at the throat.
Is 14 mm large for a pendant pearl?
Yes, deliberately so. Most pendant pearls sit between 8 and 10 mm. At 14 mm this one reads clearly from across a room and carries a plain chain on its own, without needing stones around it.
The chain is 18 inches with 2 inches of adjustment, so the pendant falls just below the collarbone at the shortest setting and onto the upper chest at the longest.
Will the rhodium plating wear off or tarnish?
Rhodium does not tarnish — that is the reason it is plated over silver. It is a hard, bright, platinum-family metal, and while the silver underneath would darken on its own, the rhodium layer keeps it from meeting the air.
Plating is still a surface. Kept dry, wiped after wearing and stored away from other jewellery, it holds for years of regular wear. Chemicals, chlorinated water and abrasive cleaning are what shorten it.
How should I care for the set?
Put it on last, once perfume, hairspray and lotion have dried. Pearl is nacre and porous — those are what dull it over time, not ordinary wear.
