Layered Necklace
Look along any two strands and the rhythm is different. Nobody programmed this — somebody decided it, bead by bead.
Every strand runs pearl, pearl, pearl, then one deep red quartz — and the count between the reds is different on every strand. Two pearls to a red here, four there, five somewhere in the middle, and the interval shifts again as the strand travels. A machine would have made all nine identical. This was judged by eye, bead by bead, by somebody holding the thread.
The nine strands are graduated in length, each a little longer than the one above, so they lie apart instead of collapsing into one another. They are strung on cotton thread rather than wire — which is why the whole thing drapes and follows the body instead of holding a fixed curve.
The Intermixing
No two strands repeat the same sequence. The interval between the red beads is a decision, not a setting.
The Graduation
Nine lengths, each set slightly longer than the last, so every strand keeps its own line on the chest.
Pearl & Quartz
Real freshwater pearls, slightly irregular as real pearls are, against smooth polished quartz in a deep ruby red.
Nine strands, and not one of them repeats another. That is the part a factory cannot do.

Work like this is getting harder to find. Stringing by hand, graduating the lengths, judging where the colour should fall — it takes a person who has done it long enough to decide by eye, and fewer of them are left each year.
We make these because we want the skill to still be here in ten years. Every one is strung at the Totapari studio.

- Put it on last, once perfume and hairspray have dried. Pearl is porous and dulls with repeated contact.
- Keep the thread dry. Cotton is the part that ages, not the pearls — water and perfume shorten its life more than wear does.
- Lay it flat to store, strands parallel. Bunching or hanging a nine-strand necklace is what twists the layers around each other.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing. No water, no silver dip, no ultrasonic cleaner.
All our jewellery is handcrafted, and hence some variations may occur, which only add to its beauty.
Questions
Why don’t the strands match each other?
Because they were not meant to. Each strand carries its own interval between the red beads — two pearls to a red on one, four or five on another, and the count shifts again along the length. Set them side by side and no two lines agree.
That is the whole point. Nine identical strands would read as one thick rope; nine different ones read as nine, and the eye keeps finding somewhere new to rest. It is also the part that cannot be automated: someone has to decide, bead by bead, where the colour falls.
Is the red stone a ruby?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. It is quartz in a deep ruby colour — a hard, natural, well-polished stone, but not corundum and not priced as though it were.
What it gives you is the depth of colour you want against pearl, at a price that lets the necklace carry nine strands of it.
Are the pearls real?
Yes — freshwater pearls throughout. Look closely and they are not perfectly round: slightly flattened, each with its own shape and surface. That irregularity is how you tell a real pearl from a moulded bead, which is identical every time.
How does the adjustable length work?
The necklace closes on a thread that slides, so it wears anywhere between 18 and 25 inches. At the short setting the top strand sits close under the throat and the whole fan opens across the collarbone; let out, everything drops and the lowest strands fall onto the chest.
With nine layers the setting changes the piece completely. Short makes it a collar; long makes it a cascade.
What should I wear it with?
Plain silk, tissue or a solid-colour saree with an unworked blouse. Gold, ivory, cream, deep green, black — anything that gives nine strands an empty field to sit against.
Keep the ears small and the neck otherwise bare. This necklace is already nine lines across the chest; a second necklace or a heavy blouse turns the layering into clutter.
Can it be restrung later?
Yes. Cotton thread is the part that eventually wears, and restringing is normal maintenance for a piece like this rather than a repair — the same way a good strand of pearls is restrung every few years of regular wear.
Bring it back to us when the thread softens or a strand starts to sit loose. The beads and pearls outlast the thread many times over.
