Black Onyx Silver
Banjara Necklace
Polished, not faceted — each drop holds a single line of light down its curve instead of scattering it.
A row of silver bicone beads runs the width of the collar, and between every pair hangs a black onyx teardrop — smooth, polished, no facets at all. Faceting would have made them sparkle; left plain, they read as weight and depth instead, with a faint violet cast where the light turns the edge.
Below them the piece changes register. Small charms alternate all the way along: a cluster of plain silver balls with ribbed caps, then a cluster of faceted agate in muted violet, green and grey, then silver again. That alternation — repeat, change, repeat — is the logic behind Banjara silver, and it is why a necklace this dense never becomes a lump.
The Teardrops
Polished onyx cabochons, hung in a close row so they overlap slightly and read as one dark band across the collarbone.
The Silver Charms
Plain silver balls on ribbed caps, the old Banjara vocabulary. They swing, and they are the reason the necklace makes a sound when you move.
The Agates
Small faceted beads in muted violet, green and grey — the only colour in the piece, and deliberately soft so it never fights the black.
Tribal silver is built from repetition with one change every second beat. Take the change away and it is a chain; take the repetition away and it is a charm bracelet.

- Never use a silver dip, an ultrasonic cleaner or a polishing liquid. A dip strips the darkening that gives oxidised silver its depth, and the necklace comes back flat and bright.
- Keep the cord dry. It is the one part that wears, and water and perfume shorten its life more than anything else.
- Lay it flat to store rather than hanging it by the cord, so the weight of the drops does not rest on the tie.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing. Onyx is hard but it will scratch against harder stones, so store it on its own.
All our jewellery is handcrafted, and hence some variations may occur, which only add to its beauty.
Questions
Why are the stones not faceted?
Because the design is not asking them to sparkle. A faceted black stone throws hard white flashes; a polished cabochon holds one soft line of light down its curve and stays dark everywhere else.
Against oxidised silver that matters. The silver is already matte and dark, and a row of glittering stones above it would read as costume. Polished, the two finishes agree with each other.
What does “Banjara” mean here?
The Banjara are a community found across western and central India, long associated with heavy, hand-worked silver — broad collars, hanging charms, small bells, and colour used sparingly against darkened metal.
This necklace is made in that idiom rather than sold as an antique: the bicone beads, the ball-and-cap charms and the alternating rhythm all come from it, made new in 92.5 silver.
How does it fasten, and how long is it?
On a black cord that ties, so the length adjusts rather than fixing at one setting. Worn short it sits as a collar with the drops resting just below the collarbone; let out, the whole bib falls lower onto the chest.
The short setting is what the design assumes — the drops are cut to overlap slightly, and that only happens when the curve follows the neck closely.
Is it heavy to wear?
It has real presence, and it is meant to. The weight is spread along the full width of the collar rather than pulling from one point, and a cord distributes that more kindly across the back of the neck than a metal chain does.
It is a piece for an evening or an occasion rather than a desk day — the charms move and make a faint sound as you do.
What should I wear it with?
Plain, and preferably unfussy. White, ivory, black, indigo, natural linen, a plain cotton kurta, a solid saree — anything that leaves the neckline clear and lets the row of drops be the only line across the chest.
Keep the ears small and the wrists quiet. This necklace is the whole outfit's jewellery; a matching set would be two statements in the same breath.
